Padre de Familia se caracteriza por su humor satírico y ácido sin censuras, con el que vuelca a veces cierta inquina sobre algunas figuras o instituciones de la realidad. A través de atrevidas escenas y flashbacks que rozan la calumnia, logró definir la fórmula perfecta de un éxito que lo mantiene en antena desde 1999. En este batiburrillo de osadías, todas sus temporadas cuentan con la participación de diversas celebridades, entre las que destacan unas más que otras. Uno de los personajes más queridos y surrealistas de la serie es el alcalde Adam West, que se incorporó a la trama en el año 2000 y permaneció como secundario habitual hasta su muerte en 2017.
Adam West como alcalde de Quahog
El personaje de Adam West en Padre de Familia es tan particular porque es una mezcla muy bien diseñada entre la realidad y la ficción. Se trata de una caricatura ficticia y extremadamente excéntrica del actor que le prestó la voz, el mismo Adam West. Conocido especialmente por interpretar a Batman en la serie de televisión de los años 60.
En la ficción de Seth McFarlane, West es el alcalde de la ciudad, Quahog, Rhode Island. Lo que lo convierte en personalidad pública con constantes intervenciones en la historia.
El alcalde West se describe como un hombre de la tercera edad maniático y paranoico, con una excentricidad hilarante y al eterno borde del delirio. Cosa que lo lleva a mostrar un comportamiento de lo más bizarro y desternillante, además de tomar cuestionables decisiones de gobierno. Entre sus innumerables extravagancias, está la de sellar las tumbas de los muertos con cemento para evitar el surgimiento de zombies. Tragar material de supervivencia para estar listo en cualquier momento de peligro. Sugestionarse fácilmente ante cualquier amenaza de espionaje, incluso dudar de cuál es su verdadero nombre. Confundir su humana existencia con la de una hortaliza. Vengar la supuesta muerte de unos marineros amenazando al mar con un cuchillo. Y, por supuesto, malversar los fondos públicos de la alcaldía para cualquier fin absurdo y descabellado.

Además de su participación como alcalde, Adam West también tuvo un interesante vínculo con los integrantes de la familia Griffin. Por ejemplo, mantuvo una cuestionable y extraña relación con Meg, la hija adolescente. Que tuvo que romper cuando Brian amenazó con hacerla pública para dañar su reputación. Más tarde se casó con Carol Pewterschmidt, la hermana de Lois, después de que ésta tuviera una pésima trayectoria amorosa de relaciones infructuosas.
En general, sus intervenciones son breves y fugaces pero muy efectivas en cuanto a comedia se refiere. Convirtiéndose en uno de los personajes más queridos por la audiencia de toda la serie.
El diseño del personaje por Seth McFarlane
Prácticamente toda la genialidad detrás de Padre de Familia se le debe a su creador Seth McFarlane. Quien además pone voz a varios protagonistas y trabaja como guionista de la serie. Esta última también fue su responsabilidad en otra producción pasada de Cartoon Network, Jonny Bravo. De la que por lo visto absorbió parte de la inspiración para crear al personaje de Adam West.
La excentricidad de West es una especie de homenaje a la excentricidad de Jonny Bravo. De hecho, McFarlane se basó en las características del personaje animado de los 90 aunándolas con ciertos matices del Batman de West para crear al alcalde. Todo lo demás corrió a cargo de la excelente interpretación del actor y su buena voluntad para involucrarse en el proyecto

La primera y la última aparición del alcalde West en Padre de Familia
Como es sabido, Adam West falleció en el año 2017 a los 88 años y probablemente su intervención en Padre de Familia lo ayudó a irse de este mundo con el cariño y respeto de toda la audiencia.
Su primera aparición en la serie fue en el duodécimo capítulo de la segunda temporada, Fifteen Minutes of Shame (15 minutos de vergüenza), el 25 de abril del año 2000. Al momento de su muerte, ya había grabado material para varios episodios que se emitieron de forma póstuma.
La temporada 17, lanzada en 2019 le rindió su último homenaje con una aparición en tributo en el capítulo Adam West High, en que ponen su nombre al instituto de los protagonistas. En palabras de uno de los productores de la serie, Steve Callaghan, West es insustituible. Pero su salida del programa seguramente reflejará la importancia que tuvo su personaje dentro de la serie.
