En el año 1927 ocurrió uno de los acontecimientos políticos más fraudulentos en la historia de Liberia. El entonces presidente del país, Charles Dunbar King, buscaba la re-elección y ganó de manera arrasadora con más de 15 veces el número de votantes registrados. Su gobierno duró solo hasta 1930 ya que lo forzaron a salir por polémicas relacionadas con esclavitud y pésimo manejo de los recursos del estado. Hoy en día se le recuerda no por su desastroso desempeño como servidor público, sino por las sucias artimañas que utilizó para hacerse con el cargo.
Charles King asciende al poder
Charles Dunbar Burgess King fue el decimoséptimo presidente de Liberia desde 1920 hasta 1930. Fue miembro del Partido True Whig, que gobernó el país entre 1878 y 1980, Fiscal General desde 1904 hasta 1912, y Secretario de Estado de Liberia desde 1912 hasta que fue elegido presidente por primera vez en 1919.
En este puesto, asistió a la Conferencia de Paz de París de 1919 y al Primer Congreso Panafricano. Aunque era un joven partidario de la innovación, continuó apoyando el dominio del Partido Verdadero Whig y las tradiciones conservadoras de sus patrocinadores.
En 1927, King se reeligió para un tercer mandato después de derrotar a Thomas J. Faulkner, del Partido Popular, en las elecciones presidenciales. Ganó con más de 15 veces más votos que electores.

La elección más fraudulenta de la historia
La Comisión Nacional de Elecciones del país, se refirió al referéndum como «el más amañado», y se incluyó en los records Guinness como las elecciones más fraudulentas jamás reportadas en la historia. Según un comunicado oficial, a pesar de que en aquel momento había menos de 15,000 votantes registrados en Liberia, King recibió alrededor de 243,000 votos, en comparación con los 9.000 de Faulkner. Por lo que era más que evidente que no fue un sufragio justo.
Después del vergonzoso suceso, Faulkner acusó a miembros del gobierno del Partido Verdadero Whig de utilizar mano de obra esclava en el hogar y también vender esclavos a la colonia española, además de involucrar al ejército en el proceso. Como es la norma en los gobiernos africanos, Charles negó todas las acusaciones.
La renuncia al poder
En 1930, a pesar de las negativas del gobierno a cooperar, salió a la luz un informe de la Comisión Internacional de Investigación sobre la Existencia de la Esclavitud y el Trabajo Forzoso en la República de Liberia. En el documento, el jurista británico Cuthbert Christy implicó a funcionarios del gobierno, incluyendo a King y al vicepresidente Allen Yancy, de beneficiarse del trabajo forzoso de muchos ciudadanos.
Como resultado, la Cámara de Representantes inició procedimientos de acusación contra King, quien renunció rápidamente. Le sucedió Edwin Barclay. Faulkner disputó las elecciones de 1931, pero volvió a perder. Desde entonces no se ha vuelto a ver un acto de descaro tan grande en el mundo y el suceso quedó registrado como un evento vil y torpe que caricaturiza la ambición de permanencia en el poder.
