Un grupo de investigadores australianos descubrió que lo que parecía ser un ecosistema marino de casi 200 km2 gobernado por la posidonia australis, resultó ser un único ejemplar de esta planta. Es decir, el ser vivo más grande del mundo hasta la fecha, que además podría ser también el más antiguo con vida.
La posidonia australis
La posidonia australis es una especie de planta marina que crece específicamente en las costas del sur de Australia. Forma largas hojas de color verde intenso capaces de superar los 80 cm de largo y alrededor de 10 de ancho. Y se reproduce con enorme resistencia al clima y otras condiciones a lo largo de grandes extensiones, formando praderas subacuáticas impresionantes.
Esta particularidad la convierte en una de las especies que más aportan a la biodiversidad del océano. Incluso para la preservación y limpieza natural del agua.
Estas enormes praderas bajo el mar se identificaron hasta en 17 deltas alrededor de Australia. Pero los descubrimientos más recientes comprobaron que la posidonia australis es, de hecho, el ser vivo más grande del planeta.
La planta más grande de la Tierra
Un grupo de investigadores biólogos de la Universidad de Australia Occidental realizó un estudio para dimensionar la diversidad genética de las praderas marinas en el área de Shark Bay.
Tomaron muestras genéticas de todos los entornos del ecosistema y el resultado que obtuvieron fue sorprendente. Se trata de una sola planta que se extendió por más de 180 km2, lo que la convierte en la más grande de la Tierra.
Además de lo que esto significa para la biología marina, sumado a otros enigmas de su naturaleza y desarrollo, se estima que este ejemplar de posidonia australis tiene al menos 4,500 años de antigüedad. Esto la convierte, por si no fuera suficiente, en la planta más longeva del planeta también.
La posidonia como mecanismo natural contra la contaminación oceánica
Al otro lado del mundo, en el Mediterráneo, se está analizando la capacidad de la posidonia como filtro natural para limpiar el océano.
Un estudio de la Universidad de Barcelona concluyó que esta especie puede capturar y extraer fragmentos de plástico para preservar el fondo marino. Pudiendo retirar más de 800 millones de desperdicios al año en áreas costeras.
Al parecer, los bosques subacuáticos de posidonia sirven como una trampa para atrapar incluso los fragmentos de plástico más pequeños. Estos compuestos se acumulan con el tiempo hasta finalmente salir expulsados durante las tormentas, con las olas y el viento. Un proceso resultado de la erosión natural marina, en conjunto con la morfología de esta sorprendente planta.
