La saga de videojuegos Crash Bandicoot es una de las más queridas por los jugadores de Play Station. Fue creada en 1996 por la desarrolladora Naughty Dog y se compone por cuatro títulos. La trilogía original de Crash Bandicoot, Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back y Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped. Y el cuarto lanzamineto, Crash Team Racing.
Los tres primeros juegos, la esencia de la saga, pertenecen al género de plataformas, que posteriormente fue evolucionando a otros tipos a lo largo de los años. El cuarto título es una versión más parecida al Mario Kart, personaje al que Naughty Dog hace incluso algunas referencias.
La historia de Crash Bandicoot
La historia de Crash Bandicoot trata de Crash, un marsupial modificado y evolucionado por un científico loco llamado Neo Cortex con intenciones de dominar el mundo a través de sus animales mutantes. El objetivo de Crash es impedir los planes de Cortex a toda costa a través de divertidos niveles y batallas hilarantes contra enemigos de todo tipo.
En el año 2017, la compañía Vicarious Visions lanzó una remasterización de la trilogía original bajo el nombre Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, expandiendo la franquicia más allá de Play Station hacia todas las plataformas. La oportunidad perfecta de los nostálgicos para volver a jugar con una de las mascotas más apreciadas de la industria de los videojuegos.
Curiosidades y easter eggs
Después de tantos años tras su lanzamiento inicial y sobre todo con el impulso que supuso la remasterización de la trilogía, salieron a la luz muchas curiosidades del juego que los fanáticos desconocían.
El origen de Crash y las innovaciones de la saga
- Crash es un peramélido o bandicuts, un tipo de mamífero marsupial similar a la rata, del que derivó su nombre Bandicoot. En su versión más temprana, Naughty Dog había diseñado un wombat o uómbat, otro tipo de marsupial originario de Australia, que se habría llamado Willy the Wombat.
- Hasta el momento, todos los juegos de plataformas se basaban en un movimiento lateral u horizontal con respecto a la pantalla. Esto es, de izquierda a derecha o viceversa. Naughty Dog planteó por primera vez la tercera dimensión en el género, ampliando el movimiento hacia adelante y hacia atrás. A este concepto lo llamaron Sonic’s ass por razones obvias y en referencia al antecedente del erizo azul.
- Otra de las propuestas que la saga Crash Bandicoot trajo a la industria fue la dificultad dinámica. El juego presenta variaciones y adaptaciones de la dificultad de los niveles en función de las habilidades del jugador. Por ejemplo, si el jugador es algo torpe, el juego le provee de más vidas extra, más máscaras de Aku Aku o la ralentización de enemigos y obstáculos.
Referencias externas y a otros videojuegos
- Cuando el jugador mantiene a Crash quieto en medio de la partida, el marsupial empieza a moverse y a hacer cosas jocosas bastante entretenidas. Baila, gesticula o juega con la fruta, interactuando con Aku Aku y otros personajes si están ahí. Si se trata de un nivel en el que se maneja a su hermana Coco, ella suele sacar sus dispositivos electrónicos para distraerse con ellos. En algunos casos de la versión remasterizada, Coco saca un smartphone con el que se toma algunas selfies que termina explotando tras echar algunas chispas. Muchos consideran que esto se trata de una referencia a los teléfonos Samsung Galaxy 7, que sufrieron ciertos problemas con la explosión de sus baterías y estuvieron a la venta los mismos años del desarrollo de Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, 2016-2017.
- El nivel en el que Crash huye en dirección inversa de una gigante roca rodante es una clara referencia a la película Indiana Jones, en busca del arca perdida. Algo muy similar a uno de los obstáculos que Nathan Drake debe superar en Uncharted 4, título de la saga Uncharted también desarrollada por Naughty Dog. Esta no es la única coincidencia entre ambos juegos, ya que existen referencias mutuas en multitud de ocasiones. La imagen de fondo en el pc de Coco en la intro de Crash Bandicoot 2 o una cinemática de Uncharted 4 en la que los protagonistas juegan a Crash Bandicoot en su PS1.
Easter eggs graciosos y otras curiosidades
- El objetivo de cada nivel es que Crash obtenga una serie de cristales y gemas. Cuando no se consiguen los cristales, Cortex expresa su desesperación y un enfado progresivo bastante desternillante a lo largo de los intentos, hasta llegar a explicar minuciosamente cómo conseguirlos y dónde.
- En el grupo de niveles en la nieve de Crash Bandicoot 2, si se salta con Crash sobre el osito polar se reciben 10 vidas extra. Llegar a esa conclusión es bastante gracioso dada la naturaleza del gesto en sí, ya que el osito es sumamente adorable.
- En el tercer título de la trilogía, si se aplica el comando «arriba, arriba, abajo, abajo, izquierda, derecha, izquierda, derecha, cuadrado» en la pantalla de carga, se abrirá una demo del juego Spyro the Dragon.
- En algunos casos al finalizar los niveles, aparece por la pantalla una versión fea y extraña de Crash que baila de forma peculiar. Este personaje se llamaba inicialmente Trash Bandicoot, un juego de palabras que significa basura; pero terminó siendo Fake Crash.
- Existe un manga en Japón basado en el juego Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back. Por su traducción al español, se titula Baila, después salta. Es la gran aventura, y solamente consta de 2 tomos hasta que fue cancelado.
El legado de Crash Bandicoot
Crash Bandicoot estuvo a punto de ser la mascota de Play Station. Se convirtió en uno de los iconos de los videojuegos de plataformas junto a otros grandes personajes como Mario o Sonic.
