En una caverna del macizo de Ernio, en el valle de Aizarna de la provincia de Guipúzcoa, en el País Vasco, un grupo de espeleólogos encontró en 2004 el primer río de leche de luna de la Tierra. Un curioso fenómeno natural que parece sacado de mitos y leyendas.
Se trata de una sustancia blanca resultado de la precipitación de calcita, entre otros cristales y minerales. Mientras en otras cuevas alrededor del mundo se identificó este compuesto en forma semi sólida adherido a las paredes, en Guipúzcoa se ha visto fluir como un río como nunca antes.
Qué es la leche de luna
La primera vez que se observó este fenómeno geológico fue en Suiza en el siglo XVI, momento en el que se le denominó «leche de luna» por su particular aspecto. En aquel entonces, la sustancia se aplicaba como tratamiento de úlceras, fiebres y hasta en cosmética. E inspiró, evidentemente, un sinfín de leyendas y cuentos mitológicos. Posteriormente se encontraron otras formaciones en América, África y Australia.
En sí, la leche de luna es un depósito de cristales y materiales carbonatados, como calcita, hidromagnesita o monohidrocalcita, derivados de la piedra caliza, que se acumula comúnmente en las paredes de las cuevas con esta composición. Tiene una apariencia de sustancia blanca y pastosa, con densidad variable.

El hallazgo en España
La peculiaridad del hallazgo en España es que la leche de luna encontrada en Guipúzcoa fluye de forma líquida como un río.
Según los informes de la expedición en el valle de Aizarna, se encontró un cauce blanco de unos 50 cm de profundidad a lo largo de alrededor de 150 metros de galerías cavernosas. Tras analizar la sustancia, resultó ser un compuesto de calcita, cuarzo y brushita. Además de un hidróxido de aluminio, elemento formado por cristales muy pequeños, y que provoca el estado líquido de esta materia.

De esta manera y para sorpresa de los espeleólogos, quienes creían ver algo de otro mundo, en el País Vasco se encuentra el primer río de leche de luna hasta la fecha en el mundo.
