Por su fuerza y su capacidad destructiva, el huracán es uno de los fenómenos naturales más peligrosos y temidos de la Tierra. A lo largo de la historia la ciencia se ha centrado en la observación y la investigación meteorológica, tratando de desarrollar la tecnología suficiente como para prever fenómenos de alto impacto y así evitar lo máximo posible la devastación que pudieran desencadenar.
Las condiciones climatológicas de algunas zonas del planeta propician la formación de este tipo de tormentas. Por lo que están sujetas a una serie de protocolos de evacuación y sistemas de alerta que, en algunas ocasiones, no llega a ser suficiente.
El huracán Patricia fue el más poderoso hasta el momento de los registrados en la historia del mundo. Sucedió el 22 de octubre de 2015 y presentó ráfagas de viento de hasta 400 km/h en las costas mexicanas de Jalisco, Colima y Nayarit.
Qué es un huracán y cómo se forma
Se le llama comúnmente huracán, aunque el término correcto según la meteorología es ciclón tropical. Este nombre se refiere al origen geográfico del fenómeno, que casi exclusivamente tiene lugar en las regiones tropicales del planeta; y a la naturaleza ciclónica de las tormentas, que rotan en sentido contrario a las agujas del reloj en el hemisferio norte, y en el sentido de las agujas del reloj en el hemisferio sur.
El ciclón tropical es un sistema tormentoso en el que existe una circulación cerrada de aire alrededor de un centro de bajas presiones, que produce abundantes lluvias y vientos de alta fuerza y velocidad. Este fenómeno extrae su energía de la condensación del aire húmedo y dependiendo de su fuerza puede denominarse depresión tropical, tormenta tropical o huracán. En función a su ubicación se considera tifón si sucede en la costa asiática (Filipinas, Taiwán, China o Japón), o solamente ciclón en las costas del Océano Índico.
El huracán suele formarse sobre superficies de agua cálida muy extensas y en unas condiciones atmosféricas determinadas. En ocasiones no surgen directamente como ciclón tropical, sino como un ciclón de otro tipo que termina adquiriendo las características tropicales.
La imagen arquetípica del huracán se caracteriza por la definición clara de su ojo en el centro de la elipse de rotación del aire. Esto se genera por los vientos que giran en dirección a la troposfera. Cuando el huracán entra en tierra tiende a perder fuerza y a disiparse, por lo que las áreas más dañadas suelen ser las zonas costeras.
La estructura y las características del fenómeno
El huracán es una zona de baja presión atmosférica, entre las más bajas registradas en toda la superficie terrestre al nivel del mar. El núcleo que conforma un huracán es cálido y expulsa grandes cantidades de calor derivado de la vaporización que asciende y provoca la condensación del vapor de agua.
Su anatomía se conforma por el ojo, la pared del ojo y las bandas lluviosas.
El ojo se forma si el área del huracán es lo suficientemente fuerte. En este punto, la temperatura es más cálida conforme se asciende y no hay nubes, como en el centro de un tornado. Puede variar desde 3 km hasta 370 km de diámetro y provocar violentos movimientos de las masas de agua en el océano.
La pared del ojo es una banda que rota a su alrededor a grandes velocidades, las nubes alcanzan la altura más alta y las lluvias son más intensas. Es la parte más destructora del huracán y de su fuerza ascendente o descendente depende la gravedad total del fenómeno.
Las bandas lluviosas son masas de aire cálido que ascienden y forman nubes de gran altura que se alejan del centro de la tormenta y empujan el aire frío hacia el mismo centro, que desciende por ser más pesado. Este descenso de aire frío sucede con una velocidad en aumento debido a que reduce el radio de su giro.
En un sentido más gráfico, un huracán se observaría como dos espirales en rotación: una nubosa que asciende y se expande desde el centro hacia la troposfera, y una superpuesta que desciende y se contrae hacia el centro. Cuando la espiral descendente llega al suelo, se forman los tornados.
Las categorías de un huracán, sus efectos y daños
El huracán o el ciclón tropical se clasifica según la fuerza e intensidad del viento de acuerdo a la escala de Saffir-Simpson.
Esta escala fue desarrollada en 1969 por el ingeniero civil Herbert Saffir y el director del Centro Nacional de Huracanes de Estados Unidos, Robert Simpson.
Cuando la intensidad de un ciclón tropical supera la clasificación de tormenta tropical, se convierte en un huracán. Y éste se divide a su vez en cinco niveles de intensidad.
De la categoría 1 a la categoría 5
La categoría 1 presenta vientos de 119 a 153 km/h y una marejada ciclónica de 1.2 a 1.5 metros. La marejada ciclónica es la inundación costera producida por los fuertes vientos que empujan la superficie oceánica. Un huracán de categoría 1 podría causar daños en casas no amarradas o cimentadas, arbustos y árboles, inundaciones en zonas de costa y daños de poco alcance en áreas portuarias.
La categoría 2 presenta vientos de 154 a 177 km/h y una marea de 1.8 a 2.4 metros. Puede llegar a causar daños en tejados y zonas altas de los edificios, puertas y ventanas, en la vegetación, inundaciones y rupturas de amarres en puertos.
La categoría 3 presenta vientos de 178 a 209 km/h y una marea de 2.7 a 3.7 metros. Provocaría daños estructurales en edificios pequeños e inundaciones graves con potencial destructivo en zonas costeras e incluso zonas de interior.
La categoría 4 presenta vientos de 210 a 251 km/h y una marea de 4 a 5.5 metros. Generaría daños de estructuras protectoras, desplome de tejados en edificios pequeños y una alta erosión en las playas y bordes de la costa. Desencadenaría inundaciones hacia zonas de interior.
Por último, la categoría 5 presenta vientos de 252 a 400 km/h y una marea de más de 5.5 metros. Destruiría completamente algunos edificios y provocaría inundaciones devastadoras. Pueden llegar a requerir la evacuación masiva de áreas residenciales y generar muchos desperfectos urbanos como el arranque de raíz de los árboles, postes y hasta casas desde los cimientos.
Monitorización, observación y predicción
La observación y medición de un huracán o cualquier tipo de ciclón tropical intenso es muy complicada debido al peligro que supone.
Las estaciones meteorológicas que se encargan de estudiar estos fenómenos no suelen estar situadas en el lugar de la tormenta, por lo que habitualmente se envían vuelos de reconocimiento con equipamiento especial para introducirse en el ciclón. Por ejemplo, la región atlántica está supervisada por los Cazadores de huracanes del gobierno de los Estados Unidos, un escuadrón de reconocimiento cuya misión es investigar los datos meteorológicos de los ciclones de la zona. Para estas funciones, utilizan aviones C-130 Hércules y Orión WP-3D, equipados con cuatro motores turbopropulsados y sondas GPS. Estos aviones miden la temperatura, la humedad, la presión y la velocidad del viento entre el nivel de vuelo y la superficie oceánica.
En el año 2005 se experimentó con una nueva forma de examinar tormentas, lanzando una aerosonda pilotada remotamente en la tormenta tropical Ophelia, a su paso por la costa de Virginia, en Estados Unidos.
Además de estas opciones, los satélites meteorológicos monitorean y fotografían la superficie terrestre desde el espacio, mostrando imágenes visibles e infrarrojas en intervalos de 15 a 30 minutos. También existen otros métodos como el Radar Doppler, un sistema de ondas electromagnéticas que mide distancias, altitudes, direcciones y velocidades.
Los huracanes más catastróficos de la historia
A lo largo de la historia se registraron huracanes de categoría 5 con enormes e irreparables daños, tanto humanos como económicos y estructurales.
En 1970, el Ciclón Bhola se convirtió en uno de los desastres naturales más mortíferos de la era moderna, acumulando alrededor de 500,000 personas fallecidas en zonas de Bangladesh e India. En abril de 1991, de nuevo en Bangladesh, otro ciclón causó la muerte de 140,000 personas, un huracán de categoría 5.
El Huracán Mitch alcanzó la categoría 5 en 1998 en América Central, con vientos de hasta 290 km/h y la muerte de 18,000 personas.
